HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR POOL AND ENCLOSURE IN WINTER?

Blog categories

Winter is here, bringing with it snow season and frost. If you haven’t winterized your pool and enclosure yet, now is the time. Take advantage of any sunny day to make the most necessary adjustments to your pool and enclosure. This will help prepare them for the upcoming snow and freezing days. We're here to guide you through the process.

Clean the pool
You should start by cleaning the pool. Vacuum the bottom and sides of the pool. For proper function of filtration units and pumps, it’s important not to leave the pool dirty for more than 5 months. This will save you a lot of trouble at the beginning of the new season.
Clean the filter
Clean the filter by removing all debris. A clean filter is essential for maintaining clean pool water. Just be aware that cleaning methods differ for sand and cartridge filters. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Check water parameters
Test the water using test strips. The correct pH level should be between 7.4 and 7.6, with total alkalinity between 100 ppm and 150 ppm (ideal is 125 ppm). Calcium hardness should be between 175 ppm and 225 ppm, and chlorine levels between 1 ppm and 3 ppm. If you don’t have the necessary testing tools, your pool specialist can help you measure and adjust the water values.
When handling chemicals, never forget to protect yourself – wear gloves, a face mask, and safety goggles. In case of contact or splashing, seek medical assistance immediately.
Add algaecide for winter
To prevent algae growth in your pool and to ensure easy winter maintenance, use an algaecide. It also helps prevent water discoloration, unpleasant odors, and clogged filters caused by algae. Before use, make sure chlorine levels are between 1–3 ppm. Otherwise, chlorine may render the algaecide ineffective.
Lower the pool water level
When winterizing your pool, the water should be lowered below the skimmer. Any residual water in the skimmer can freeze and may cause it to crack. Again, follow the manufacturer's instructions for best results.
Pool enclosures are important even in winter
A pool enclosure saves you a lot of hassle. It prevents leaves, dry grass, insects, and other debris from falling into the water. It also protects pets and garden animals from accidentally falling into the pool. Additionally, it helps prevent snow from accumulating in the pool and slows down freezing of the water. We recommend spraying the enclosure locks with a special lock lubricant. Regularly sweep off accumulated snow with a soft-bristled broom. While curved enclosures allow snow to melt off naturally, the snow layer should never exceed 10 cm in height. Keep in mind that wet snow is heavier than freshly fallen snow.
You’ll surely manage to winterize your pool and enclosure successfully – and you can already start looking forward to the next pool season!
